Voyage LA: Life & Work with Maria Timonina

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria.

Hi Maria, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?

My story starts with my parents. They immigrated to the U.S. from the Soviet Union. I was raised in the Midwest before getting my BFA in Acting from Boston University and made my way out to Los Angeles, CA. I’m now a bi-coastal TV/Film Actress. I recently achieved a huge career goal: guest-starring on Ron Howard’s new Netfix show!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?

Yep!

Just kidding. It took me years to actually find my footing in this industry. From finding a survival job to recovering from personal tragedies to getting called in for auditions at all, I’ve dealt with pretty much every obstacle a working actor faces these days.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?

I’m an actor who gravitates toward roles that are emotionally charged, deeply human, and grounded in truth. I’m most at home in characters who feel things fully but still find the strength to act with purpose. I think that’s part of what drew me to Alice Wells in Ron Howard’s gritty Netflix thriller, The Gringo Hunters. She’s strong, empathetic, and led by this unwavering sense of justice. Playing her didn’t feel like acting; it felt like remembering.

What I’m most proud of is getting to tell stories that matter. In this case, it was a story inspired by true events. One that sheds light on the ripple effects of trauma, the resilience of sisterhood, and the power of collective voices. That kind of storytelling changes people. It changed me.

If there’s one thing that sets me apart, it’s probably the way I approach performance which is from the inside out. I lead with feeling and intuition. I want the work to hit at a soul level, not just emotionally but viscerally. I think that’s what people respond to most in my work, the honesty.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?

I love collaborating with people who care deeply about story, about character, and about saying something real. Whether it’s drama or comedy, on camera or on stage, I’m always open to considering work that feels bold and rooted in truth and working with filmmakers who are telling cool stories!

The best way to connect is by reaching out via Instagram @maria_timonina. I genuinely love hearing from other creatives. Whether you’re a filmmaker with a project, a writer with a script, or someone who just connected with the work and wants to say hi, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

As for support, honestly, even watching The Gringo Hunters on Netflix (I’m in the first episode) when it comes out July 9th means the world. Sharing the show, talking about it, or reaching out if it moved you, that kind of support is powerful. It reminds me why I do this in the first place!
